Qld: Cairns hosts cyclone summit

Helping Queensland prepare for and respond to cyclones is the focus of a summit being
held in Cairns over the next two days.

Experts on cyclones and disasters from around Australia and overseas have gathered
at James Cook University for the summit.

Premier PETER BEATTIE says the government's tapping into expert knowledge to reduce
the impact of cyclones on Queensland's tropical communities.

In the last 100 years .. about 185 cyclones have hit the Queensland coast.

Scientists say cyclones are likely to become bigger .. more frequent and further south
because of climate change.
