Qld: Artificial reef to be built in Moreton Bay

BRISBANE, Feb 10 AAP - A $1 million artificial reef will provide for recreational anglers
in Queensland's Moreton Bay, Sustainability Minister Andrew McNamara says.

The state government is extending protected areas in Moreton Bay Marine Park, to ensure
its long-term environmental health.

However the plans have angered recreational anglers, who say their enjoyment of the
bay will be diminished.

Mr McNamara said the artificial reef would help restore the balance when new zones
come into effect.

"The artificial reef will provide alternate sites to recreational fishers, following
the rezoning of sections of the Marine Park," he said.

Queensland Game Fishing Association conservation officer Dr Evan Jones said the organisation
was keen to work on the plan.

"Well-designed artificial reefs with careful placement can help restore and replenish
areas in and around Moreton Bay, and help enhance fishing and recreational experiences,"

he said.

The reef is likely to be placed in an area where coral reefs were destroyed decades
ago to obtain lime for making concrete.

Ironically, the artificial reef will probably be made of concrete, returning the lime to the bay.
