Fed: Nursing home can rebuild confidence through reprieve: ACCV
CANBERRA, Aug 23 AAP - The Belvedere nursing home could regain the confidence of the
community after it won a last minute reprieve to continue operating, Aged and Community
Care Victoria says.
The federal Health Department cancelled the Melbourne nursing home's accreditation
after a four-day audit revealed it had breached all but two of the 44 aged care standards.
In a special sitting last night, the Administrative Appeals Tribunal ruled the nursing
home would be allowed to continue operating temporarily pending an appeal against the
Health Department's decision.
The home will have to appoint an approved administrator to operate the 30-bed facility
and lift standards.
Aged and Community Care Victoria CEO Gerard Mansour said residents who moved back into
the nursing home would be protected.
"Residents then would be protected through the requirement to appoint an administrator,
who must be approved through the department under the Aged Care Act, and that gives time
now for the matter to proceed to a full hearing," Mr Mansour told ABC radio.
"The approved provider now, provided they meet these requirements, can set about trying
to rebuild confidence to the community."
