FED:Govt in a corner over boat policy: Bishop
PERTH, Aug 5 AAP - The federal government has painted itself into a corner with its
"truly awful policy" of sending asylum seeker children to Malaysia, acting opposition
leader Julie Bishop says.
A coalition government would not send any asylum seekers to Malaysia but would reopen
the detention centre on Nauru and continue to protect detainees there, she told reporters
in Perth on Friday.
"The government has painted itself into a corner.
"It either allows unaccompanied children to be taken to Malaysia to an uncertain fate
where the Australian government has no control over what happens to them or the government
caves in to the people smugglers."
Ms Bishop said that either way it was a "diabolical outcome" for asylum seekers and
a bad outcome for Australia.
She said if the coalition was in office it would reopen the Nauru detention centre
which was available and built with Australian taxpayers' dollars.
"We knew where the asylum seekers were 24 hours a day.
"We provided protection and security and the health services and education services."
Ms Bishop said the Nauru option was a far better alternative than the Malaysian solution.
She said Prime Minister Julia Gillard could not guarantee what would happen to asylum
seeker children sent to Malaysia.
"I think it's a truly awful policy."
Ms Bishop said Labor backbenchers who had expressed concern about the Malaysian swap
deal should withdraw their support from the prime minister.

NSW:Man swerves stolen car at police officer
SYDNEY, April 10 AAP - A driver selected for a random breath test twice swerved a stolen
car at a police officer, then sped away, police say.
The 24-year-old driver was prompted to pull over by police conducting a random breath
test in the Newcastle suburb of Mayfield, just before 2.30am (AEST) on Sunday.
He allegedly responded by swerving towards a senior constable twice, narrowly missing
him before speeding away.
Police pursued the car before it crashed into a median strip and guard rail at an intersection
in Tingara Heights.
The driver was arrested and taken to Mater Hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests.
He was later charged with offences including avoiding a police pursuit, reckless driving,
driving whilst disqualified, and failing to stop for a random breath test.
Bail was refused for him to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Monday.

FED:$56 a month for basic NBN access
AAP General News (Australia)

FED:$56 a month for basic NBN access
By Peter Veness and Adam Bennett
CANBERRA, Dec 20 AAP - Households are likely to pay about $56-a-month to secure basic
access to the $35.9 billion national broadband network.
The NBN business plan, released on Monday, shows telecommunications companies will
have to pay a monthly rate of $24 for a basic 12 megabits per second package.
When this service is sold onto families and businesses, retailers are likely to charge
about $56 per month.
The long-awaited plan also promises a seven per cent rate of return for the company
rolling out the network, NBN Co Ltd.
The assumption is based on a 70 per cent takeup of the network by businesses and homes.
Further to the expected rate of return is the prediction of a $13.4 billion capital
raising from the markets by 2015.
Prime Minister Julia Gillard lauded the business case, saying taxpayers' investment
"will be returned with interest".
"What this document is telling you today is the NBN is viable," she said.
"That's before you go to all of the economic benefits for business."
But Opposition Leader Tony Abbott declared the plan was yet more evidence of a government
unable to deliver promises on time or on budget.
"The roll-out of the NBN was promised to be completed in eight years," Mr Abbott said.
"We now learn that it will not be complete until 2021, three years later and 14 years
after Labor's original failed NBN tender."
Communications Minister Stephen Conroy has admitted a range of factors could influence
the timing of the network's rollout or budget.
"They include the labour market," Senator Conroy told Sky News.
"This (rollout) is over a nine-and-a-half-year period but Australia is already moving
towards a degree of labour shortages."
"The whole Australian economy has that as a capacity constraint."
Senator Conroy said NBN Co was already in discussions with construction companies about
training up a skilled workforce.
The minister's opposite number, Malcolm Turnbull, challenged the very foundation of
the plan, saying it delivered no "nirvana for cheaper broadband".
"It's supposed to deliver universal and affordable broadband, and yet the broadband
price that they've talked about today ... is comparable, it is certainly no cheaper than
many comparable prices for 12 megabits per second for broadband ADSL2+," he told reporters
in Sydney.
Reaction outside political circles was largely positive although University of New
South Wales competition expert Frank Zumbo raised a series of concerns.
"In addition to the many questions and concerns relating to the cost and revenue assumptions
used in the NBN Business Plan, there are concerns surrounding wholesale and retail pricing
of NBN services," Prof Zumbo said in a statement.
"This will lead to price disparities at both the wholesale and retail level adversely
affecting consumers, particularly those consumers in regional Australia."
When parliament last sat the government released a summary of the business case.
Ms Gillard said the government had since received advice from the competition watchdog
on the points-of-interconnect (POI) decision and that was incorporated in the business
plan.
A POI is the location where internet traffic is exchanged between one network and another.
Ms Gillard said the government accepted the advice of the watchdog to adopt a so-called
"semi-distributed model", to use existing infrastructure and to have more points of interconnect,
allowing business access to the NBN.
"The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has advised the government that
with this model, the ACCC has the regulatory powers it needs to ensure a uniform wholesale
price should the market not deliver that," she said.
The business plan shows a February 2012 deadline for the network to be offering business
"commercial services" while remote locations will be able to fully and permanently access
the high speeds via two satellites by 2015.

Sandakan survivor silent to the end
* Governor-General Quentin Bryce will represent Australia at the 65th anniversary of
the Sandakan Death Marches in East Malaysia from this Saturday to next Monday. She will
join more than 100 Australians, including former Sandakan POWs Russ Ewin and Lesley Bunny
Glover, at a memorial ceremony at Sandakan Memorial Park this Sunday.
** Queenslander Owen Campbell was the last survivor of the infamous Sandakan death
marches, one of the darkest episodes of World War Two. Taken prisoner by the Japanese
after the fall of Singapore in 1942, Mr Campbell was transferred to Sandakan, Borneo,
the following year. He and the other prisoners endured forced labour, beatings, torture,
a starvation diet and illness. In 1945 two groups of about 500 of the fittest prisoners
were marched out of the camp to Ranau. Men soon began dying of disease and exhaustion.
Some were murdered. About six days into the march, when allied aircraft strafed his group,
Mr Campbell and four comrades escaped into the jungle. One died during the escape and
three others were killed after reaching the coast. Mr Campbell, sick and near death, was
saved by a local guerrilla leader who fed and hid him from the Japanese until he could
be taken through enemy lines and be rescued. He died in 2003 aged 87. Three years earlier,
on January 26, 2000, he was awarded an Order of Australia medal. The following article
is based on an interview he gave on that occasion to AAP Senior Correspondent Doug Conway.
**
By Doug Conway
SYDNEY, Aug 12 AAP - Not even an Australia Day honour will coax 84-year-old Owen Campbell
to talk about the atrocities he and 2,400 other prisoners of war suffered in North Borneo
in 1945.
"I won't be in it," said Mr Campbell, the last man alive of the five who managed to
escape, thanks to the native jungle dwellers who scorned Japanese reward money and death
threats to harbour them.
"They've asked me to do a book but I say nothing doing. Never. Just let sleeping dogs lie.
"They (the victims) still have relatives and family alive. It would just upset them,
to think about what their loved ones suffered on that march."
Mr Campbell won't even record the details on archival tape for public release generations hence.
He occasionally talks about the war in general terms to his family - his wife of 59
years, Evelyn, five children, 14 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
"But I don't tell them anything about the atrocities," he said from his Beachmere home,
north of Brisbane.
He does, however, believe that authorities should keep alive the Sandakan story, which
RSL official Bruce Ruxton has called the greatest tragedy ever encountered by the Australian
Army and "the worst brutality meted out to any POWs this century, outside of concentration
camps".
"It's getting known more in schools now," Mr Campbell said.
"And the people of Sandakan will keep it alive. They're well up on it."
Mr Campbell holds no grudges against the younger generations of Japanese.
"They weren't even alive at the time," he said. "But the old blokes I'll never forget or forgive.
"I still have nightmares - a few bad ones. They're getting less and less. But you never forget."
Mr Campbell has been back to Sandakan five times but there won't be a sixth return visit.
"I'm not going any more. I said my goodbyes last time. I'm too old in the tooth to
be fluttering about."
He described his own survival as a miracle, made possible by determination - "I decided
they weren't going to beat me" - and the thought of his family back at home.
"The bloke upstairs helped a lot, too, no two ways about that. Somebody is definitely
ruling the roost."
Mr Campbell said a sense of humour was normally a prerequisite for POWs but it made
no difference at Sandakan.
"There was no humour on the march," he said.
"Everyone was sick. It was just too serious."

NSW: German towers over opposition in skyscraper race
SYDNEY, Aug 21 AAP - The German winner of a race up Sydney Tower's 1,504 steps says
he knew he would win, despite only arriving in Australia three days ago.
"I knew I would win," Thomas Dold said. "I don't have time for jet lag."
Dold, 24, only arrived in Australia on Tuesday and was boarding a flight home with
his $7,500 prize just three hours after the gruelling Sydney Tower Run-Up, described by
one elite competitor as a "world of pain".
Perhaps such a forward thinking attitude should be expected from an athlete who holds
world backwards running records and has previously won races up New York's Empire State
Building and Taiwan's 101 tower.
Dold made a last-minute decision to enter the Sydney contest and shrugged off the pain
to complete the sprint up the 305 metre tower in 7mins 4secs - collapsing in a heap at
the viewing platform finish line.
His time was only 12 seconds off the 6mins 52secs record set in 2000 by Canberran Paul Crake.
"Flying from Germany is not cheap, so I had to be confident about winning," Dold told
AAP after the race.
"To be honest I knew I would win, I was very confident.
"I've adjusted to the time difference by going out to train at very early in the morning.
I don't have time for jetlag."
The race, run on a time-trial basis, attracted a field of elite domestic and international
runners along with celebrities and novelty competitors, including fire fighters in full
equipment.
Double amputee Dwayne Fernandes was also among the runners.
Whereas Dold has special permission to train in some of Germany's tallest buildings,
Canberrans Mark Bourne (7mins 26secs) and Scott McTaggart (7mins, 35secs), second and
third in the men's elite race, are at a disadvantage because there are no skyscrapers
in the ACT.
"There's nothing over 22 floors in Canberra and even those I'm not allowed to train
in because they're worried about terrorism," McTaggart told AAP.
"After a minute into the race you're just into a world of pain, it hurts."
Vanessa Harverd won the women's elite race in a time of eight minutes and 57 seconds,
also scooping $7,500.
"I really didn't expect to win, I had no idea," she told AAP after the race.

WA: Elusive croc found near Cape Farquhar
PERTH, April 12 AAP - An elusive three-metre saltwater crocodile has been found off
Western Australia's northwest after leading wildlife officers on a prolonged chase.
Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) wildlife officers have been chasing
the crocodile since Tuesday when it was spotted near the holiday mecca of Coral Bay, 1,200km
north of Perth.
It was spotted again on Wednesday afternoon but escaped wildlife officers until it
was located by a spotter plane at 3.30pm (WST) on Saturday at Gnaraloo Bay.
Attempts to pinpoint the crocodile failed and by Sunday morning it had travelled about
15km to 25km north to Cape Farquhar, a DEC spokeswoman said.
The crocodile was about 20m offshore and had been hugging the coastline during the
various sightings.
"It's been pretty hard to spot because it keeps diving among the coral but eventually
they spotted it when it came up for breath," the spokeswoman told AAP.
Wildlife officers have put a boat in the water to get to the crocodile and will decide
whether to remove it from the area or destroy it.
Crocodiles are usually not seen as far south as Coral Bay, where tourists flock to
enjoy camping and fishing along the Ningaloo Reef.
DEC had warned visitors to the Ningaloo Marine Park to stay out of the water and keep
away from the water's edge while the crocodile remained at large.

NSW: Grog ad debate wanted, Rees says at brewery site
SYDNEY, Dec 5 AAP - The community wants to have a debate on whether there should be
tougher restrictions on alcohol advertising, NSW Premier Nathan Rees said as he attended
a ceremony for a new brewery.
NSW Health Minister John Della Bosca raised the issue at a meeting with his state and
federal counterparts in Brisbane on Friday, and they agreed to look at the matter.
Mr Della Bosca said reducing alcohol consumption, especially among young people, would
have a positive impact across many areas.
"There would be a massive impact on the incidence of road and industrial accidents
which would have huge health benefits, take a lot of pressure off emergency departments
and (have) a huge impact on the burden of alcohol-related disease," he said.
"The numbers are very clear - the savings to the economy alone are measured in the billions."
Mr Rees, commenting at a sod turning ceremony for a new $120 million Bluetongue Brewery
on the NSW central coast, said there had been a shift in community sentiment about alcohol
culture.
"You go back 20 years and people talked about banning cigarette advertising for example,
people thought that was over the top at the time," he said.
"But I don't think anyone now would question that has worked, and worked well.
"I think these are the debates the communities want to have. Should we or shouldn't
we advertise something that, when used to excess, leads to alcohol-related violence and
serious health risk."
He said any attempt to curb alcohol advertising would require a national approach.
Opposition health spokeswoman Jillian Skinner had mixed feelings about toughening up
alcohol advertising laws.
"I'm not absolutely convinced that an advertising ban would have the impact that some
are suggesting," Mrs Skinner told reporters.
"I haven't seen any evidence that it would."
The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons said any measure that helped to curb excessive
alcohol consumption should be welcomed.
"Curbing the irresponsible consumption of alcohol must be central to any meaningful
preventative health strategies," chair of the college's trauma committee, Danny Cass,
said.
"Tougher restrictions on alcohol advertising must be part of such a strategy."

Fed: NRL throws weight behind Missing Persons Week
SYDNEY, Aug 4 AAP - Images of five missing people will be splashed on the big screens
at National Rugby League games this week, as the football code does its bit for National
Missing Persons Week.
The NRL will tackle five unsolved cases, beginning at tonight's game between the Knights
and Eels in Newcastle.
The NRL will also promote the cases at the St George and Wests Tigers game this Friday
in Wollongong, and the Sharks and South Sydney game on Saturday.
NRL chief David Gallop said the clubs hadn't hesitated to offer their support during
Missing Persons Week.
"We've got a great ability to reach a large and diverse audience at our games so, hopefully,
we might provide a few leads that help in solving some of these cases," Mr Gallop said
in a statement.
Missing Persons Unit commander Inspector Mark McCallum said police hoped the exposure
provided at the high-profile sporting events would "shed some light" on where the five
missing people might be.
"I urge anyone who recognise the faces and has information relating to their whereabouts
to contact the Missing Persons (Unit) on 1800 000 634," Mr McCallum said.
The five missing people whose images will be shown at the rugby league games are Stephen

Qld: Artificial reef to be built in Moreton Bay
BRISBANE, Feb 10 AAP - A $1 million artificial reef will provide for recreational anglers
in Queensland's Moreton Bay, Sustainability Minister Andrew McNamara says.
The state government is extending protected areas in Moreton Bay Marine Park, to ensure
its long-term environmental health.
However the plans have angered recreational anglers, who say their enjoyment of the
bay will be diminished.
Mr McNamara said the artificial reef would help restore the balance when new zones
come into effect.
"The artificial reef will provide alternate sites to recreational fishers, following
the rezoning of sections of the Marine Park," he said.
Queensland Game Fishing Association conservation officer Dr Evan Jones said the organisation
was keen to work on the plan.
"Well-designed artificial reefs with careful placement can help restore and replenish
areas in and around Moreton Bay, and help enhance fishing and recreational experiences,"
he said.
The reef is likely to be placed in an area where coral reefs were destroyed decades
ago to obtain lime for making concrete.
Ironically, the artificial reef will probably be made of concrete, returning the lime to the bay.

Fed: Nursing home can rebuild confidence through reprieve: ACCV
CANBERRA, Aug 23 AAP - The Belvedere nursing home could regain the confidence of the
community after it won a last minute reprieve to continue operating, Aged and Community
Care Victoria says.
The federal Health Department cancelled the Melbourne nursing home's accreditation
after a four-day audit revealed it had breached all but two of the 44 aged care standards.
In a special sitting last night, the Administrative Appeals Tribunal ruled the nursing
home would be allowed to continue operating temporarily pending an appeal against the
Health Department's decision.
The home will have to appoint an approved administrator to operate the 30-bed facility
and lift standards.
Aged and Community Care Victoria CEO Gerard Mansour said residents who moved back into
the nursing home would be protected.
"Residents then would be protected through the requirement to appoint an administrator,
who must be approved through the department under the Aged Care Act, and that gives time
now for the matter to proceed to a full hearing," Mr Mansour told ABC radio.
"The approved provider now, provided they meet these requirements, can set about trying
to rebuild confidence to the community."

Fed: Blasphemy or free speech? Cartoons provoke global row
By Doug Conway, Senior Correspondent
SYDNEY, Feb 6 AAP - The Muslim world is in a frenzy over blasphemy, the Western world
is in a tizz about freedom of expression - and all because of a dozen poorly drawn, distinctly
unfunny and otherwise unremarkable cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed.
It's difficult to tell whether the pen is mightier than the sword in the furore over
the caricatures first published in Denmark five months ago and since reprinted in Europe
and New Zealand.
The pen has triggered a chaotic reaction - attacks on Danish embassies in Lebanon and
Syria, the resignation of a Lebanese government minister, demonstrations in Indonesia
and Britain, a senate resolution in Pakistan and threats to New Zealand's sheep trade
with Iran.
It has also led to the arrest of two newspaper editors in Jordan, the sacking of one
in France and the resignation of another in Malaysia, appeals for calm from Denmark and
condemnation of the cartoons' publication from at least one king (Jordan's), one president
(America's), one prime minister (New Zealand's) and one foreign minister (Britain's).
The sword's response has startled and disappointed many in the West, and apparently
played a part in preventing further publication, with the inflammatory reaction weighing
heavily on the minds of editors, including those in Australia.
Australian newspapers have so far opted not to publish, especially in light of recent
racial violence in Sydney beach suburbs, a stance which some applaud as responsible and
others denigrate as a failure to exercise free speech.
"You do have a bit of a social responsibility in the newspaper to think through those
kinds of things," said Sydney's Daily Telegraph editor David Penberthy.
"Particularly at a time when there have been a lot of tensions in Sydney between Anglo-Australians
and particularly Lebanese Muslims over the summer.
"I don't know whether people would really want to take the risk of that level of social unrest."
Melbourne Herald Sun editor Peter Blunden said he did not need to publish the cartoons
to demonstrate press freedom, and to do so was "more trouble than it's worth".
"Why would you put people at risk?" he asked.
Sydney Morning Herald editor Alan Oakley said newspapers often engaged in self-censorship.
"To have a debate about pornography you don't have to publish pornographic pictures," he said.
Press reports have described the cartoons in great detail, raising the question of
whether that is as offensive as the drawings.
They are also available on at least one Australian website.
Islamic tradition forbids any depiction of the religion's holiest figure, but one caricature
shows Mohammed wearing a turban shaped like a bomb with a burning fuse.
Another shows him pleading with suicide bombers in paradise: "Stop, stop, we ran out of virgins."
The prophet is also depicted wearing horns and as a knife-wielding bedouin.
The Islamic Army in Iraq, which has claimed responsibility for killing foreign hostages,
urged militants to kidnap Danes and "cut them into as many pieces as the number of newspapers
that printed the cartoons".
A European Islamic group responded by posting anti-Jewish cartoons on its website,
including an image of famed Dutch Holocaust victim Anne Frank in bed with Adolf Hitler.
The Australian government has steered clear of the debate, but opposition foreign affairs
spokesman Kevin Rudd said Australia was a free country and should not be stood over by
any group, including militant Islamists.
"These decisions should be made on their journalistic merit by Australia's news media," he said.
"We should not be kowtowing to anybody when it comes to freedom in this country."
Victoria's police chief Christine Nixon warned publication in Australia could damage
community relations.
And Islamic community leader Dr Ameer Ali asked: "Which is more important? To preserve
the freedom of speech, or to antagonise one fifth of humanity who are completely offended
by this obscene cartoon?"
Media outlets across the Tasman have taken a more liberal line.
The Christchurch Press newspaper said it published the cartoons not to cause offence
but to inform its readers.
"They (the cartoons) are now at the centre of a global news story and the newspaper
cannot pretend they do not exist," it said.
"Neither will it be cowed by the threats from those seeking to impose their taboos
on the rest of the world."
The New Zealand Herald, however, went the other way.
"We declined to print the cartoons," it said, "not simply because they were offensive
- we carry comment every day that may offend some people - but because they had no other
purpose.
"They were designed simply to prove that media are free to offend Muslims. We already knew that."
The most vocal defence of free speech has come from the Europeans.
French interior minister Nicolas Sarkozy said he would prefer "an excess of cartooning
to an excess of censorship".
And German editor Roger Koppel of Die Welt invoked Monty Python's ability to make Christians
laugh at themselves.
"It's at the very core of our culture that the most sacred things can be subject to
laughter," he said.
"Without this there would be no Life Of Brian."

Bedmap.com Announces the Launch of its Unique Interactive Map-Based Hotel Search Service.
Toronto, ON (PRWEB) June 13, 2011
Bedmap.com today announced the launch of its unique hotel search service. In an industry dominated by a few large and well-established players, Bedmap is innovating by building upon Google's familiar map technology and placing a strong focus on user experience.
Instead of conventional hotel result pages, Bedmap's results are in the form of a large interactive map plotting hotel locations. The major advantage of this approach from a traveler's perspective is as a platform for comparison shopping. Nightly rates are prominently displayed and categorized as "cheap" or "expensive" compared to others nearby, giving shoppers a sense of what to expect in unfamiliar places.
Bedmap's fast and clean interface will continue to differentiate it from others. "Our goal is to not bombard the user with information that's distracting or not useful," says James Lavigne, the project's founder. "We often hear that the search for the perfect hotel is overwhelming and stressful. We don't think it needs to be that way."
In response to many travelers' complaints about charges for wireless internet, Bedmap provides the option to view a map of just hotels offering free Wi-Fi. Other filtering options such as 'free parking' and 'free breakfast' further help travelers narrow down on the best value for their money.
The service is well-positioned to serve the increasing number of travelers on a budget, who prefer lower-priced accommodation often closer to home. Its ability to browse large areas is particularly appealing to those traveling by road. According to MSNBC's Rob Lovitt, "The site may be most useful for travelers considering road trips and other non-destination-based travel since you can grab the map, plan your way along your route and check rates at the hotels that pop up along the way."
Partnerships with industry leaders provide Bedmap with a very comprehensive global hotel database. For more information and to find your next hotel room, visit Bedmap.com's hotel map.
About Bedmap
Bedmap.com is a Toronto-based startup founded in January 2011, focused on bringing a fresh approach to the process of finding the right hotel. The ferry was carrying 252 passengers and 18 crew members when it rammed the St. George Ferry Terminal pier.

In her speech to the 270 graduates, she referenced the legacy of the historically black school, which opened in 1873 with seven students, most of whom could barely read. "Let's just imagine how those seven students would feel if they could see you here today," Mrs. Obama said.

Twitter star: Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is tops on Twitter in Venezuela less than two weeks after launching his account, surpassing Internet-savvy foes who dominate the social-networking site and use it to oppose him. Chavez's account, "chavezcandanga," had racked up more than 237,000 followers as of Saturday, besting the 234,000 who receive tweets from Globovision, the only TV channel that remains critical of the socialist leader. The president joined Twitter on April 27 in an attempt to counter adversaries who have actively used the site to make accusations of human-rights violations, organize protests and -- above all -- ridicule Chavez.
Royal operation: King Juan Carlos of Spain successfully underwent lung surgery to remove a small benign growth, doctors said Saturday. Dreamweaver brings HTML to life. (Macromedia's WYSIWYG editor)(Product Announcement)(Brief Article)
In the fast-moving world of the Web, today's top HTML editor can be tomorrow's roadkill. The latest contender for the crown is Macromedia's Dreamweaver, a WYSIWYG editor due in December that creates animated, CD-ROM-style Web pages using a new version of HTML called Dynamic HTML.
Like CyberStudio and NetObjects Fusion, Dreamweaver ($299 through February 1998, $499 after) lets you design Web pages by dragging items on a page. But while those programs use complex HTML tables, Dreamweaver uses a new HTML fea- ture, absolute positioning, to place objects with pixel-level accuracy. It also supports cascading style sheets, which lets you apply styles to a Web page or an entire site via a floating Style palette.
There's even CD-ROM-style interactivity: Via the Timeline Inspector, you can make text and graphics slide across a page or appear and disappear when you click on a link.
Hands off the Code
Web authors will appreciate Dreamweaver's hands-off approach to HTML code--we found that unlike with most WYSIWYG editors, opening several complicated pages revealed only a few rewritten tags. The tags Dreamweaver changed contained errors, which Dreamweaver corrected. Another plus is Dreamweaver's tight integration with Bare Bones Software's excellent BBEdit text editor, which is bundled with it. A library stores commonly used fragments of HTML code such as headers and footers. When you change an element in the library, Dreamweaver can automatically make that change on every other page in your site.
There are drawbacks to being a Web pioneer, though: Dynamic HTML pages require Internet Explorer and Navigator versions 4.0; older browsers see only a mish- mash of text and graphics. In contrast, CyberStudio and Fusion's layout meth- ods are compatible with most Web browsers in use today. Plus, Dreamweaver's interface for creating and editing older, more-common HTML tags such as tables doesn't seem as strong as either CyberStudio's or PageMill's. And much of Dreamweaver's impact has to do with being the first WYSIWYG editor to support Dynamic HTML. But will it be king of the hill in a few months? As is always the case in Web time, that's anyone's guess.
Ready Mix, Inc. Reports Second Quarter Results.(Financial report)
LAS VEGAS -- Ready Mix, Inc. (RMI) (AMEX:RMX) today announced financial results for the second quarter and first half of 2008.
"The decline in residential construction that began nearly two years ago in our market, which consists of the metropolitan areas of Las Vegas, Nevada and Phoenix, Arizona, continued to affect Ready Mix, Inc.'s operating performance in the second quarter, offset somewhat by non-residential construction activity that has held up better and longer than in previous construction industry cycles," said Chief Executive Officer Bradley Larson.
"The recent stabilization of new home building permits in our market is a welcome sign that residential construction may be nearing a bottom, but we are taking nothing for granted. During the second quarter we completed the installation of a fourth batch plant in Phoenix that allows us to make more efficient use of our existing fleet of ready mix trucks, and gives us a strong presence in a geographic location projected for rapid growth in the future. We remain focused on keeping our costs as low as possible, while seeing to it that Ready Mix, Inc. is fully equipped to take advantage of the upturn when it finally takes hold," Larson said.

The net loss for the second quarter of 2008 was $0.5 million, or $0.12 per diluted share. This compares to net income for the second quarter of 2007 of $0.8 million, or $0.21 per diluted share.
First Half of 2008 Results

Cat talking WM sense.(WM)
Here's a 21st century dilemma for you. Is it wrong to search for your ex-boyfriends on Facebook?
That has been the discussion among the WM girls this last week.
As the popularity of the internet social networking site grows, so does the ease of tracking down long-lost friends and colleagues. But where do you draw the line? Is it natural curiosity to want to know what the former loves of your lives are up to - or is it clear signs of "bunny boiler" tendencies? And what about if you're in a relationship? Could it be cause for creating unnecessary jealousies and issues of trust?
The idea of searching for exes had not really occurred to me until Hubby - who won't join Facebook because he thinks it's pointless becoming friends again with people you couldn't be bothered to stay friends with in the first place - was using my Facebook profile to look at old friends of his to see who else they were still in touch with.
"Oh look," he said. "There's my ex-girlfriend from when I was 17."
"Yeah, I bet she's a real bitch," I muttered, mortified that Hubby should deem it suitable to talk about exes only weeks into our marriage.
"No she's not," he said. "She was really nice. I had a broken leg when I went out with her and she used to drive me everywhere."
"Yeah, she was so nice you dumped her after two weeks," I retorted, having heard this story before. He didn't have a come back for that one.
It was a few days later when I stumbled upon an ex of my own. I knew he was friends with one of my friends, but it was rather weird seeing his face staring back at me after all these years. He's set up his profile so that only his friends can see what he's been up to - mine is laden with wedding photos and open to all so I'm sure he's looked. Ha!
The weirdest thing though, is when you stumble upon an ex in someone else's list without even realising they know each other.
It wasn't my ex I found this way, but the ex of one of my closest friends. He broke her heart at university and after we all graduated we never saw him again. Of course I rang her up to tell her the minute I found him and she duly leapt online to have a nose. But not until we'd debated whether it was right to be looking at exes when you're in a serious relationship.
"This is such a modern dilemma," I said to her.
"You think that's a sign of the times?" she replied. "My colleague found out on Facebook that the guy she thought of as her boyfriend was in a relationship with another girl. She was such a technophobe he never thought she's sign up so didn't think to conceal it. How's that for being totally 21st century?"
Who ever would have thought finding your other half snogging someone else would have a 21st century equivalent? Probably hurts just as much as the old way though.

Podcasting to Nanocasting Alliance Aims to Separate Internet Radio Hype From the Real Promise; Event Will Bring Together Sober and Experienced Business Minds.
LOS ANGELES, March 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Guerrilla Marketing International and Jackstreet Media announced more details of the five city conference -- scheduled for Orlando, Las Vegas, San Francisco, New Orleans and Vancouver -- as part of the Guerrilla Marketing Business University Tour. The sessions will zero in on the business fundamentals of podcasting and examine the broader issue of "Nanocasting" -- the term for commercial podcasting that targets other niche communities beyond Ipodders. The sessions will examine real life applications of Nanocasting deployed in business scenarios and examine the real world value of Internet radio as a business tool and a business model.
"Nanocasting refers to the programming produced for the smallest, most narrowly but clearly defined target audience. This is the audience that is most interested in the type of programming and from a marketing standpoint, the audience that is most likely to buy related products," said Jay Conrad Levinson, the founder of the Guerrilla Marketing concept. "Internet radio makes reaching these affinity groups economically viable in ways that broadcasting can't match, so there are some real possibilities here. Our aim is to bring together some bright, experienced and committed people to find the best approaches," said Levinson.
The program is being held at upscale hotels, limited to 200 people, and priced at $3,997 to attract serious business people and media entrepreneurs.
"Podcasters got it right. Internet radio is about affinity groups and niche communities that are passionate about something....beer or God or whatever. Podcasting, by definition, targets the community of Ipodders -- which by some estimates number about 22 million in total," said Errol St. Clair Smith, Director of Guerrilla Marketing Radio and founder of Jackstreet Media. "But the total universe of people with broadband access who can tune into Internet radio via their PCs is over 150 million, and there are all sorts of affinity groups and online communities that are ripe for this application. Nanocasting includes them all -- from podcasters to beercasting to Godcasting. Nanocasting first defines the affinity group then asks, what is the right business model for reaching this affinity group using Internet radio," said Smith.
